Saturday was a big day on the water, with both the Nushagak and Egegik fleets hauling in over 1 million fish each. The daily catch was nearly 2.5 million, bringing the bay-wide run total to almost 12 million fish.

Fleets hauled in another 1.6 million fish bay-wide Thursday, with the biggest harvest in Egegik. Escapement doubled yesterday in the Naknek-Kvichak district, with over half a million fish returning there. The total baywide catch is at 18.8 million fish, and the total run is at 25 million.

Harvests slowed down a bit after a surprise encore of record harvest days over the weekend. But catches were still going strong Sunday with a baywide catch of 1.43 million. Naknek-Kvichak and Egegik fleets brought in the biggest harvests again yesterday. Escapement was at 550,000 fish. The bay wide run is now 45.9 million, fast approaching the season forecast of 51 million fish.

Welcome to the Bristol Bay Fisheries Report! It’s a very different start to the season than last year, the 2023 season forecast is down from last year’s record-breaking run of 79 million fish - but still strong at an estimated 51 million. And, we dive into some of the impacts of last season’s massive harvest - what some market analysts are calling a “hangover year” - and fishing crews respond to what could be a dramatic drop in prices.

The total bay-wide harvest kept climbing after the surprising haul Thursday. Friday’s harvest was a staggering nearly 3 million fish, making it unequivocally the biggest haul of the season. Most of those fish came from Naknek-Kvichak, cementing some of the largest late-season catch numbers in recent memory. Escapement yesterday, though, was 706,000.

Another big harvest day Saturday in a weekend of banner late-season catch numbers for Naknek-Kvichak fleets. Total haul across the bay yesterday was 2 million fish. The total season catch is now at 33 million of a 44 million fish run. Though it remains to be seen how many fish are behind this shocking pulse, the season’s forecast is an estimated 51 million fish run. Escapement yesterday was 540,000.

It’s our final show of the season, but the run isn’t done yet. Bay-wide, fleets hauled in another 726,000 fish on Thursday, for a season total of 36.9 million. Escapement is at 13.3 million total, and the run nears the forecast at just under 50.3 million.

Medical students Courtney Stage and Michael Kaden-Hoffmann plan to work in their home state of Alaska. This summer, they assisted in Naknek, King Salmon, and Dillingham as part of the University of Washington's rural and underserved medicine program.

Rain and rough weather continued in some parts of the bay yesterday but crews baywide harvested 2.3 million fish following a huge push over the weekend. Fishing is picking up in the Naknek-Kvichak district, with the total harvest breaching one million. The baywide run is now 14.5 million.
