Dillingham wrestlers persevere at state championships, winning 2A top honors

The wolverines wrestled hard on Saturday at the state championships in Anchorage. The girls' team won 10th overall and first out of the 2A schools, and the boys won fifth place overall and second out of the 2A schools.

The Dillingham wrestling teams fought hard to place at the ASAA Wrestling State Championship on Saturday in Anchorage. Of the 16 Dillingham wrestlers who qualified for state, eight of them placed near the top of their weight class.

The Dillingham girls' team won 10th place overall with 51 points, and first place out of the 2A schools. The girls team also won the academic award with a GPA of 3.66. The boys placed 5th overall with 111 points, and second out of the 2A schools. Bethel High School placed first.

"I thought we had a good showing at the state tournament!" said Coach William Savo in an email. "I think it's human nature to always feel that we could have or should have performed better but overall I am happy with our performance and the grit and pride our kids competed with. We took a couple of tough losses in the quarters and semis that the kids bounced back from and fought back for third."

Two Dillingham wrestlers placed second in their weight class: junior Darius Tilden and freshman Kiley Clouse.

Tilden beat Sitka's Colten Ewers in the semi-finals for the 112-pound boys weight class to advance to the final match.

"Tilden and Ewers were tied up with under 20 seconds left and Darius powered through a double leg to get the winning takedown," Savo explained.

Clouse also placed second in the girls' 189-pound bracket.

"Kiley finished the season 16-3 and has been one of the most consistent wrestlers on our team," said Savo. "She has made the finals in every tournament we've entered this season. She breezed to the finals [in the state championship], picking up three pins to qualify her for the finals match against a familiar foe in Homer's Rayana Vigil."

All three of Clouse's losses this season, Savo added, were to Vigil.

The Dillingham girls team won the Academic Award with a GPA of 3.66.

Four other athletes fought back from losses to place third, in what Savo called defining moments for the team. Here’s his rundown:

Wyatt WIlliams lost in the 103-pound quaterfinals, but came back with four straight wins to place third. Demetry Hoseth, 119 pounds, lost in the semi-finals and bounced back with two wins to claim third. Zach Kolbe, 125 pounds, lost in triple overtme to the eventual state champion Jordan Korth of Glenallen in the semi-finals. Zach came through with two pins to seal a 3rd place finish. And Colten Hink, 189 pounds, lost in the semis to eventual champion Kalugin of Homer. Savo said that Hink fought through a series of tough matches to get third; he started the third period down by 6-1.

"Colten never gave up, securing an escape and a couple of takedowns to make the score 8-6 with under 30 seconds left," Savo said. "He was able to get a match-tying takedown with about 18 seconds left. We had a re-start with three seconds remaining, Colten got to a double-leg attack and was able to secure a match winning takedown as the time expired."
