Pamyua dances, sings to engage teens with Yup'ik culture

The Inuit soul group Pamyua returned to Dillingham this week for a community concert.

Their visit coincided with a youth leadership symposium that drew high school students from over half a dozen communities around Bristol Bay.

After interviewing local millenials and community leaders, the students had workshops with the Pamyua performers about music and culture.

KDLG’s Hannah Colton sat in on a session with Pamyua's Phillip Blanchett. Originally from Bethel, Blanchett told students the Native community through dance, song, and games helped him to get to where he is today.

"I want to fulfill all of my goals, and one of them is to be like them. I want to travel, learn a lot of songs, and teach," says McKenzie Nanalook (right) of Manokotak.
