Pilot Rescued Near Cold Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard has helped rescue a pilot who was stranded at the mouth of the Joshua Green River about 20-miles north of Cold Bay. The pilot was observed Wednesday morning by an Alaska Wildlife Trooper who flew over the area and noticed an airplane upside down on a sandbar. The Troopers were unable to land or communicate with the pilot via common radio frequencies so they radioed Cold Bay Flight Service and requested that a Coast Guard helicopter in Cold Bay respond to the site of the downed plane. A Coast Guard crew responded and picked up Matthew Owen from Kasifof. He was the only person onboard the airplane. No word on what caused the accident but the NTSB has been notified.
