Bristol Bay Fisheries Report

Another big harvest day Saturday in a weekend of banner late-season catch numbers for Naknek-Kvichak fleets. Total haul across the bay yesterday was 2 million fish. The total season catch is now at 33 million of a 44 million fish run. Though it remains to be seen how many fish are behind this shocking pulse, the season’s forecast is an estimated 51 million fish run. Escapement yesterday was 540,000.

The total bay-wide harvest kept climbing after the surprising haul Thursday. Friday’s harvest was a staggering nearly 3 million fish, making it unequivocally the biggest haul of the season. Most of those fish came from Naknek-Kvichak, cementing some of the largest late-season catch numbers in recent memory. Escapement yesterday, though, was 706,000.
  • We’re on the edge of a record year — 61.3 million salmon have returned to Bristol Bay waters. The previous record was set in 2018 with a whopping 62.9 million salmon. Will 2021 be the year we break records once more?
  • We’ve officially passed 60 million salmon in Bristol Bay waters as of yesterday! The run is slowing down a bit but it’s still anyone’s guess for what the final numbers will look like. Runs today are generally lower yesterday but comparable to most of the week with Ugashik's run continuing to lead the other rivers.
  • Thank you everyone who pitched in to support our 2021 pledge drive! We couldn't do it without you. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later, as the Port Moller Test Fishery hung up the hat for the season.Yesterday, the bay-wide run inched just over 59 million fish, officially crushing last year’s total. The last time the bay surpassed 60 million was in 2018. Ugashik continues to be this week’s MVP leading the bay in escapement.

The drive ends tomorrow. In other news, Ugashik continues to shine in Bristol Bay. Yesterday the district was the winner in both harvest and escapement. The total baywide run is quickly approaching last year’s season total — with only a million shy at 56.8 million fish!
  • It’s the midpoint of the KDLG pledge drive! Call us at 907-842-5281 or donate at kdlg.org.Bristol Bay’s run is 3 million fish over its pre-season forecast — more than 54 million fish have returned so far. The Naknek-Kvichak’s fleet had the biggest catch of the day, as more than 700,000 fish were hauled in, and the Kvichak saw a sizable escapement. Ugashik’s harvest was over 600,000 for the third day in a row.
  • We’re rounding out the second day of the KDLG pledge drive and we need your support to stay on air. Call us at 907-842-5281 or 907-842-1670 or donate at kdlg.org. Ugashik fishermen have hauled in over half their total catch in the past 2 days — about 1.2 million in two days! The total bay-wide run has, once again, surpassed 50 million fish.
  • The KDLG pledge drive is afoot and we need your support to stay on the air. Call us at 907-842-5281 or donate at kdlg.org. Doing so helps us bring you updates like this: Ugashik’s fleet hauled in more than half a million fish yesterday — a third of the total daily catch. More fish are rushing the Naknek-Kvichak, as over 700,000 escaped up rivers there.
  • Boats seem to be heading out of the Nushagak as the fleet in the Naknek Kvichak District continues to grow. Harvests are still plentiful, with the fleets in the Naknek Kvichak had a very successful harvest yesterday.
  • The Nushagak continues to cool off: yesterday the fleet hauled in less than a million fish for the second day in a row. Things are picking up on the East Side where fleets in the Naknek-Kvichak District nearly doubled their catch yesterday. The Ugashik District passed the one-million mark for their total season catch.
  • Harvests across the bay were down a bit yesterday. The Nushagak’s million-catch streak finally ended, as the daily haul dipped below 1 million fish. The total run in the Naknek-Kvichak District is now nearing one million. Also, the Chignik fishery has an opener coming up.
