Another big harvest day Saturday in a weekend of banner late-season catch numbers for Naknek-Kvichak fleets. Total haul across the bay yesterday was 2 million fish. The total season catch is now at 33 million of a 44 million fish run. Though it remains to be seen how many fish are behind this shocking pulse, the season’s forecast is an estimated 51 million fish run. Escapement yesterday was 540,000.

The total bay-wide harvest kept climbing after the surprising haul Thursday. Friday’s harvest was a staggering nearly 3 million fish, making it unequivocally the biggest haul of the season. Most of those fish came from Naknek-Kvichak, cementing some of the largest late-season catch numbers in recent memory. Escapement yesterday, though, was 706,000.

The Nushagak District had its third-largest single day harvest with about 1.78 million salmon caught and Egegik fishers saw another 1.2 million in their nets as well. The bay-wide run is now 34.4 million fish.

The Nushagak District broke the record for single day harvest: The fleet caught 2.46 million salmon on Thursday. Average drift deliveries there had more than 2,000 sockeye. Ugashik fishers are still bringing in the heaviest loads.

The bay’s daily sockeye run declined on Wednesday to 1.9 million salmon and Port Moller numbers are on the decline as well. Nushagak District fisherfolk caught the most fish but Ugashik fisherfolk had almost four times as many sockeye per drift delivery.

Fishing slowed down a bit in most districts, but Egegik led Tuesday's harvest again with well over half a million salmon. The Nushagak District saw about half a million in escapement and Ugashik fishermen once again brought in some big deliveries. The bay-wide run so far is at 14.3 million salmon. That’s double what last year’s total run was at this date.

The Nushagak River's sockeye escapement is now more than double its upper goal. Both the Nushagak and Egegik’s fleets hauled in huge harvests — Egegik’s fleet caught over 900,000 sockeye on Monday. Ugashik more than doubled its total harvest and had some hefty drift deliveries.

Nushagak District fleets caught more than 1.2 million fish on Sunday — the highest daily catch for that day at least since 2017. This is only the third time they've harvested over a million fish in a single day this early in the season.

Egegik fishermen hauled in the bay's biggest harvest on Saturday. Ugashik fishermen hauled in the smallest, but their drift deliveries were huge. Sockeye runs to Nushagak and Wood rivers were over 200,000. We also have revised numbers for the Nushagak's king escapement.

The Nushagak District saw a huge pulse of fish on Friday. Half a million sockeye swam past the Nushagak River sonar. More than a quarter million escaped up the Wood River. Nushagak’s commercial harvest was a bit more tempered than earlier in the week, but still the largest of the districts. More than 1 million fish returned to the bay on Friday.

The bay-wide run is over 3 million fish, and the Nushagak fleet had a big first opener, hauling in more than 800,000 fish. And the number of people fishing on the west side will only grow over the weekend. Egegik fishermen caught just under half a million fish.
