Bristol Bay Fisheries Report: July 12, 2018

Mike Davis

Fishermen in the Naknek River hauled in over a half million fish yesterday, and all three Nushagak District rivers have now hit their escapement goal midrange.

For the seventh time this season and the ninth time ever, the Nushagak District brought in over a million sockeye on Wednesday. Fish also hit the Naknek River hard yesterday, and the 283 boats netted 532,000 reds.

ADF&G biologists Travis Elison and Tim Sands discuss their management strategies for the Naknek-Kvichak District and Nushagak districts for the coming days.

Also on tonight's show, we remember two Bristol Bay fishermen who died, one of cancer ealier this year, the other in a boating accident 18 years ago today.

A special thank you to Bob King, who wrote the obituary for Andy deValpine on tonight's Bristol Bay Fisheries report. DeValpine was "a Bristol Bay fisherman and former Dillingham city councilman has died after a two-year battle with cancer... In lieu of flowers, the family has asked friends to, 'eat wild salmon, adopt a dog, and donate to the ACLU.'"

Today, July 12, 2018, is the 18th anniversary of our son, Michael Kasten's death. Michael was a fisherman in Dillingham and died in an unfortunate boating accident. He loved Alaska and Dillingham in particular so we hope that his many friends will pause today and remember him for his sense of humor, his kindness, and his drive to always have fun. We miss you Michael, as do your children and grandbabies. Love, Mom and Dad, Lauri and Jill.
