New Stuyahok man charged with murder of 25-year-old woman

Alaska State Troopers, along with the state’s investigative units, served several search warrants and conducted multiple interviews before arresting Weedman

Alaska State Troopers have arrested James Weedman, age 20, of New Stuyahok as the suspect of the murder of Angelina Chunak, age 25.

Chunak was first reported missing the night of August 8. The next morning, troopers received a report that she had been found dead in the village of New Stuyahok. Troopers responded to the scene and requested that the state Bureau of Investigations assist them. They report that Chunak had been beaten and strangled.

According to a trooper dispatch post, the troopers, along with the state’s investigative units, served several search warrants and conducted multiple interviews before arresting Weedman, who faces two felony charges of murder in the second degree and assault in the first degree. His pre-indictment hearing is scheduled for October 5 in Dillingham.

Chunak’s family has started a GoFundMeto raise money for funeral costs.

The Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation is asking the hospital to participate in a region-wide moment of silence at 9 a.m. on August 24 for the women lost to violence in Bristol Bay.
