10 people test positive for COVID-19 in Dillingham area; community spread suspected in one case

Izzy Ross/KDLG

The 10 people who tested positive Monday are from two communities in the Dillingham Census Area, according to BBAHC. They are likely not in Dillingham proper.

There is a suspected case of community spread of the coronavirus in the Dillingham area, according to the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation.

Ten people tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. Those cases are located in two different communities, the health corporation said. It did not specify which ones. However, those cases likely aren't in Dillingham, since the city said it has not been notified of any new cases among Dillingham residents.

One of the cases is suspected to be community spread -- because the source of the infection is unknown. The others are related to travel outside the region. The state health team is contact tracing.

This new batch of cases means a total of fourteen people in the Dillingham area have tested positive for the disease within the past week.

Two people in the census area tested positive on Oct. 28 and 29. Two more people tested positive in Dillingham proper. There was a nonresident case on Friday and resident case on Monday. The state announced Tuesday that another person in the census area tested positive, however that case does not show up on the health department’s COVID-19 dashboard.

The state reports that the active case count in the Dillingham area is 35, not including the 10 new cases from BBAHC.

BBAHC said that it reports cases it has identified, while the state’s dashboard reports cases from a wide range of sources.

Lake and Pen/Bristol Bay Boroughs

Eight residents in the combined Bristol Bay and Lake and Peninsula boroughs have tested positive since Oct. 27. One nonresident also tested positive.

Here's the breakdown: one case was reported Oct. 27, two on Thursday, and three on Friday. Two people also tested positive on Monday.

The state doesn't distinguish between the two boroughs, but the Camai Community Health Center in Naknek reports cases in the Bristol Bay Borough.

Camai identified three cases of COVID-19 since Oct. 28, all of which are related to travel. The people who tested positive are now in isolation, the clinic said.

Two people tested positive on Oct. 28 -- one of them reported a positive result from a test at the Anchorage airport, and one tested positive at the Leader Creek site. Another person tested positive Friday.

The borough now has five active cases, and there is a total of 40 active cases in the Lake and Pen/Bristol Bay Boroughs.
