News DirectorIzzy Ross is the news director at KDLG, the NPR member station in Dillingham. She reports, edits, and hosts stories from around the Bristol Bay region, and collaborates with other radio stations across the state.
Since 2019, Izzy has directed the Bristol Bay Fisheries Report, which provides vital information daily to thousands of commercial fishermen in the summer. She has also reported for Alaska's Energy Desk, a regional journalism collaboration with Alaska Public Media. Her work airs regularly on Alaska Public Media's statewide news. It has also aired on National Native News, Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Here and Now.
Izzy graduated from Smith College with a degree in Government in 2015. After graduating, she spent a year reporting on stand-up comedy in Berlin, Germany, on a Fulbright Journalism Fellowship. She has worked for Washington Monthly, NPR Berlin, and Deutsche Welle.

It’s the penultimate day of Fish and Game’s daily run summary. Another half-million fish came through the bay on Thursday and the total run is now 76.5 million sockeye. With harvest also at 58.2 million fish, this year’s records keep on growing. Let’s dive in.

Bristol Bay’s sockeye run has reached 76 million. As we head toward the end of July, harvests continue to drop off. But some runs are still going strong – the Kvichak’s escapement was over 100,000 fish on Wednesday. And the Nushagak District’s run is now 30 million fish.

Bristol Bay’s total run is at 75.3 million sockeye. The Naknek-Kvichak fleet hauled in the largest catch of the day again, at more than a quarter-million fish. And Area M fisherfolk caught 268,315 salmon for a total harvest of 9.45 million.

Naknek-Kvichak fleets brought in more than half of Monday’s harvest. The bay’s total catch is now at 57 million sockeye, and the total run is at 74.5 million.

The bay’s run is at 73.7 million sockeye. Harvests have dropped off around the bay, but fleets still hauled in just over half a million fish on Sunday. Naknek-Kvichak fishermen caught most of the daily harvest. Another quarter-million fish escaped up rivers across the bay. The bay’s total harvest this season is at 56.3 million fish.

Bristol Bay is seeing another record-high sockeye run this summer. But in other parts of the state, salmon runs have been low for years, and people are struggling to feed their families. Now, there are renewed efforts to share Bristol Bay’s run with others.
