The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has annouced the schedule for nine public hearings on the proposed Pebble Mine's draft environmental impact statement, which it released Feb. 20. The hearings take place in late March and early April.

An open mic will be provided at all venues for people to provide public testimony. The hearings are part of the 90-day public comment period on the draft that will begin March 1.
The purpose of the draft EIS is to analyze potential effects of the Pebble Project and develop alternatives to the proposed mine plan.
Public comments submitted in person, online or by mail will help inform the final EIS, estimated for release in early 2020. That document will serve as a tool for federal agencies as they decide whether or not to permit the copper, gold and molybdenum mine in the Iliamna Lake region of Bristol Bay. The comment period ends May 30, 2019.

March 25: Naknek - 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Bristol Bay School.
March 26: Kokhanok - 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Community Hall.
March 27: Newhalen - 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Newhalen School.
March 28: Igiugig - 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Igiugig School.
March 29: New Stuyahok - 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Community Building.
April 8: Nondalton - 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Tribal Center.
April 9: Dillingham - 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Dillingham Elementary School.
April 11: Homer - 3:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Homer High School.
April 16: Anchorage - 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Dena'ina Center.

Correction: The public comment period for the draft EIS ends on May 30, 2019, not May 31 as originally reported. The error was based on the USACE's initial document, released on Feb. 20. In that document, the Army Corps stated that the public comment period ends on May 31. It has since updated its website to reflect the correct end date.
