nSpire Recalls Peanut and Almond Butter

freestock.ca

A California-based company has recalled a large selection of its peanut butter products.  KDLG’s Chase Cavanaugh has more.

nSpired Natural Foods Inc has announced a recall of its Arrowhead Mills and MaraNatha  peanut and almond butters.  The California-based company says the products, typically sold in higher-end and specialized grocery stores like Trader Joes and Whole Foods, may have been tainted with salmonella.  Kim Stryker, the manager of Alaska’s Food Safety and Sanitation Program, says while she doesn’t know the exact cause, the contamination was probably from an outside source.

“Typically, what we have found with peanut butter is the contamination happens due to something environmental.”

As for the contaminant, Stryker says that salmonella can be a dangerous bacterium.

“Salmonella can be particularly serious for young children, the frail, or elderly, and other people with weakened immune systems. People can experience fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.”

FSS advises people with tainted butter to throw it out immediately, including the container it came in.  They also recommend people wash their hands afterward, as salmonella can remain on surfaces for weeks if not cleaned. A list of the affected peanut butter products is available by going to the website of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.
