Apparent scam delivered by SMS text message received by hundreds of Dillingham-area wireless customers.
DILLINGHAM: Many GCI wireless customers, at least in the Dillingham area, woke early this morning to an apparent scam text message.
The message announces a prize winning of $500 and prompts the recipient to click on an email address.
A customer advocate at GCI told KDLG News Friday afternoon that they have received reports of the text from many people today:
“This is a form of spam- it’s not coming from GCI. It seems to have hit multiple people in various areas," he said.
Local tech expert Stephen Longfin of Longfin Technologies in Dillingham recommends deleting the text, which is clear gimmick:
“My understanding is that this is a classic example of a spam text that goes out to multiple people all at once," said Longfin. "My advice is to not click on or open anything that you don’t recognize or from people you don’t know.”
GCI did not comment on where the link leads to or what the scam is attempting to gain. They have more information posted on the company Web site.
