Using the Web site Indiegogo.com, a Port Heiden resident is trying to raise $80,000 needed to see if geothermal energy could power the village.
Developing, even studying, alternative energy projects is usually far from cheap, which is unfortunate for smaller communities that could benefit greatly from a reduction in their diesel bills. The upfront costs are high enough that funding for projects in a village of a few dozen, or a few hundred residents is often hard to come by.
KDLG’s Dave Bendinger reports on a unique effort to raise money in Port Heiden for a study on whether or not geothermal energy could be used to make electricity and heat homes in the village.
