Tax deadline approaches

Wednesday is the deadline to file your 2014 tax returns, or an extension.

KDLG:  Tax preparer Jerry Liboff in Dillingham sees plenty of last minute, or late, filers every year.

"People wake up on the morning of the 15th and say, 'Oh, that's right, I've got to get my taxes done.'," said Liboff, taking a very brief break from his work to speak with KDLG Tuesday. "At that point, probably the only thing they can do is file for an extension."

The IRS is typically more forgiving on extensions if a filer is due a return. (Click here to download the IRS form 4868 for an extension)  But they are less forgiving if a filer owes taxes.

"They will not give you an extension to pay," said Liboff. He recommends sending a check, even with an estimated amount owed, along with the extension form.

Tax extensions also need to be filed by the April 15.

The post office in Dillingham tells KDLG News that any mail left that makes it into their dropbox by midnight Wednesday night will still be postmarked for as April 15.
