Ole Shangin, 32, was arrested Wednesday on murder charges related to the 2016 shooting death of Joseph Peterson, 31, in Ivanof Bay.

Last week Ole Shangin, 32, was arrested on charges related to the death of Joseph Peterson, 31. Shangin was arraigned in Naknek Court Friday morning. He pleaded not guilty.
Shangin faces charges of murder in the first degree and murder in the second degree. The two charges represent two different legal theories of how the death occurred.
According to Alaska State Troopers, Peterson was shot and killed in Ivanof Bay in July of 2016. Assistant District Attorney James Klugman explained that troopers have continued to investigate for the past year and a half.
“The evidence in this case that was gathered as a result of that investigation was presented to a grand jury in Anchorage. The grand jury decided to return a true bill of indictment for charges of murder in the first degree and murder in the second degree. Superior Court Judge Michael Corey issued an arrest warrant based on the results of that indictment,” said Klugman.
Troopers arrested Shangin on Jan. 31 in Perryville. Shangin said during his arraignment that he worked in the village as an on-call handyman.
Shangin is currently in custody in Anchorage. Judge Steve Cole decided during the arraignment to hold Shangin without bail.
“I find the defendant is a flight risk. And again that is based not only on his priors, but also the fact that he’s gone off radar for long periods of time and not shown up for court. And I also find that he’s a danger to the community because this really is the most serious offense there is, murder in the first degree. Given all of that, I will hold the defendant without bail at this time,” said Cole.
Shangin’s next scheduled court appearance is March 1 for a pre-trial conference. The trail will likely begin in mid-March.

Alaska State Troopers arrested Ole Shangin yesterday on two murder charges related to the death of 31-year-old Joseph Peterson. According to troopers, the Anchorage court issued a warrant for the 32-year-old’s arrest on Jan. 25. On Wednesday, Troopers traveled to Perryville and took Shangin into custody without incident.
Investigation into Peterson’s death has been ongoing since July of 2016, when troopers found he had been shot and killed in a residence in Ivanof Bay.
Shangin was transported to King Salmon, and is scheduled for arraignment Friday morning.
