New Dillingham courthouse set to open mid-June

Matt Martin/KDLG

Dillingham is closer to getting a new courthouse.  After construction delays the upgraded building should be done by mid-June.

Choggiung Limited is building the facility and then will lease it to the Department of Justice. The original completion date was May 1st but had to be pushed back more than a month because of material delays.

Rick Tennyson is Land Manager at Choggiung Limited.

“Now these doors are several hundred pounds each. These are sound lock doors, special made doors with special hardware,” said Tennyson.

These doors are required for courthouses and it took six weeks long than expected to get them into town. But with the all the doors squarely hung on the walls now, the new completion date is June 15. But a lot still needs to get done before that.

“We’ve got to hang all the plumbing fixtures. They’re working on the electrical and the data right now. We’ve got the finished the flooring that got to be put in, cabinetry and we’ve got some ground work to do outside,” said Tennyson.

Despite all the work, Tennyson is confident the work will be done.

The new building will be more energy efficient than the current courthouse and will have two superior courtrooms instead of just one. Choggiung has leased the current courthouse to the court system for over 30 years. Tennyson says they are considering 3 or 4 plans for the downtown building once it’s empty but no solid plans yet.
