17B, C winter moose hunt to open December 1

Togiak NWR

Hunters who didn't get a moose this fall can have another shot in December -- especially if ice and snow return to Unit 17B and C.

December 1st marks the start of the winter moose hunt in game management unit 17B and C.

"Only hunters who have not yet gotten a moose this fall can participate, because you can only get one moose per year here in 17B and C," says Neil Barten, the area wildlife management biologist with the Department of Fish and Game in Dillingham.

"The hunt is open for bull moose with antlers, so it has to have antlers, which is real important."

Permits and maps are available at the Fish and Game office in Dillingham, and Barten says hunters should be aware of two areas that are closed for this hunt.

"You cannot hunt within a half mile to either side of Aleknagik Lake Road," says Barten, "and then the Iowithla River drainage is also closed. Other than that, hunters need to carry their permits with them when they’re hunting. And you know, hopefully this year we’ll get a good freeze going and then a bit of snow on top of it, so people can use snow-gos and actually get out a little better than they have in the past couple years. "

The winter moose season runs through December 31.
