Katherine Moncure
Host/Local ReporterKatherine is covering local stories in Dillingham and the Bristol Bay area for the summer of 2022, and she's excited to be in Alaska for the first time. After growing up in Connecticut, she's since lived in Ohio, South Korea, New York, and Maine. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in 2016 at Oberlin College, where she studied sociology and minored in creative writing and Hispanic studies. She spent the subsequent year teaching English on a Fulbright scholarship.
Katherine is passionate about all forms of storytelling, and she recently graduated from the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, a 15-week intensive in radio and podcast production. When not working on stories or hosting the morning news, she enjoys cooking, reading, and going on aimless walks. She'll pet any dog that wants attention.

There’s been a sharp uptick of COVID cases in Bristol Bay since June 22. The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services recorded 14 new cases in the Dillingham census area and 77 new cases in the Bristol Bay plus Lake and Peninsula boroughs.

The fire grew about 400 acres toward the southeast on Friday and covered a total of 36,559 acres on Saturday. But rain helped douse the flames and satellites have not picked up any heat since then.

Only minor injuries were reported after the float plane, operated by Newhalen Lodge, crashed into the lake. Troopers in Fairbanks and Dillingham, the Village of Kokhanok and lodges in the area worked together to rescue the passengers by skiff and bring them to the village clinic.
