Spotlighting Public Education During the Month of February

A couple of Democrats in the Alaska Legislature have put forward resolutions intended to declare February as “Public Education Month” in Alaska. Public education has been a major focus of attention so far in this year’s legislation session with ongoing debates about the proper level of education funding, allowing public money to go to private and religious schools, and making improvements to the way public education is delivered in Alaska. The sponsor of the resolution in the Senate is Senator Berta Gardner from Anchorage.

“There is certainly a lot of work to be done. There is a lot of data that shows that if you have high expectation and the tools to reach them, people do better.”

Identical resolutions have been introduced in the Senate and House. Neither resolution has yet to be considered in committee. The 2nd session of the 28th Alaska Legislature is scheduled to run through April 20th.
