The Alaska Association of Secondary Principals has named Robin Jones of Chief Ivan Blunka School in New Stuyahok the Region VII principal of the year.

Robin Jones of Chief Ivan Blunka School in New Stuyahok has been named regional Principal of the Year. Jones has been an educator in the Southwest Region School District for nine years, seven in New Stuyahok.

“I think you find Robin always engaged with the students and with the teachers,” said district superintendent, David Piazza. “She’s always looking out for the best interest of the students and making sure that they have every educational opportunity that can be afforded them.”

This is Jones’ fifth year as principal for Chief Ivan Blunka School. She sees her main role as principal as building stronger relationships between students, staff and the New Stuyahok community.

“My vision for our school is just to help everyone get connected to the beautiful state of Alaska and also connected to one another so that we can provide the best possible education for our kids,” said Jones.

During her tenure, Jones has sought to develop a positive environment in the school. She initiated a staff and student of the month program to recognize successes in the school community.

One student wrote in a recommendation letter for Jones, “She helped me recognize little problems and how to deal with them and big problems and how to deal with them myself. I used to be bullied, but Ms. Jones has helped me deal with bullying and makes me feel comfortable and safe in the school.”

The Alaska Association of Secondary School Prinicipals’ Region VII includes school districts in Bristol Bay, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and the Aleutian-Pribilof region.
