Knik mishap snarls downtown Dillingham traffic

Allison Mollenkamp

A Knik asphalt truck blocked the in-bound lane of Kanakanak Road Tuesday afternoon, but otherwise no injuries or damage reported.

KDLG: A large Knik Construction asphalt truck drove partially into a ditch while turning onto Dillingham's Kanakanak Road Tuesday. The accident happened around 12 p.m.

The equipment had just been unloaded from the barge. The cab portion of the truck blocked the in-bound lane of the road. The truck hit a power pole.

A Knik employee directed traffic at the site, allowing one side at a time to use the out-bound lane to proceed. This created a significant backup of traffic immediately after the incident.

According to a Knik employee, the power line had to be de-energized so it could be picked up and put back in place. It's unclear at this time if any customers lost power during that period.

The employee directing traffic estimated the truck would be out of the ditch approximately 45 minutes after the initial incident.

DPD urged drivers to plan for some delays coming and going from downtown Tuesday afternoon.
