Environmental Restoration Continues at Port Heiden

Efforts to continue removing PCB-contaminated soil from USAF sites planned through the summer season.

Port Heiden has two former military installations, one a former WWII Army Air Corps base, and the other the Port Heiden Radio Relay Site, known as the White Alice Communication System.  Part of the Cold War-era Distant Early Warning system, that site was one of 12 around Alaska used to monitor for possible attacks from the Soviet Union.

The Radio Relay Site was becoming obsolete in the 1970’s, and was finally abandoned in 1978.  Since the early 1980s, there have been efforts to clean up and remove hazardous materials from that site, efforts which continue today.   KDLG’s Dave Bendinger has more:
