Bristol Bay Fisheries Report: July 12, 2017

Dr. Curry Cunningham, UW-FRI

The Nush goes all time big and the run is beating its preseason forecast sometime today. Catches have slimmed out a little, and boats head east for a big finale. Egegik and Nushagak fishermen have had a heck of a season ... will Ugashik and Naknek Kvichak catch up?

Our 2017 Fund Drive is underway. This show, dedicated to this fishery and its fishermen, needs your support! While you're listening to the program online, consider making a contribution under the Donate tab at the top of our website.

The catch Tuesday was 1.6 million, and with escapement the total run went to 40.3 million. Sometime today, someone caught or counted the salmon that pushed this run over the preseason forecast, to no one's surprise or dismay. To some surprise, and hopefully no dismay, the Nushagak District just set an all time record for biggest return to the district. ADF&G's Tim Sands is on the program to put that in context by the numbers and biology. KDLG's Nick Ciolino goes out with set netters in the Wood River on this momentous season, and drifters waiting out their transfer time to Naknek-Kvichak weigh in on the season. Enjoy this program? Keep it right here for next season too by taking a minute to make a quick donation.
