Wednesday December 24th (Christmas Eve)

 

11am - Noon:  Red White & Air Force Blue Christmas w/Faith Hill

            Faith Hill hosts a Christmas tribute to the United States Air Force with performances of traditional Christmas songs and a few new holiday compositions of her own.

 

8pm  - 9pm:  Tinsel Tales from NPR

            Join David Sedaris, Bailey White, John Henry Faulk and other NPR voices, past and present, as they tell stories of the season.  It’s a new holiday tradition from NPR.

 

9pm – 10pm: A Prevailing Winds Christmas Eve

            Join Prevailing Winds host Bob Madeson for a special Christmas edition of this locally produced program featuring wind ensemble and concert band performances.

Thursday, December 25th (Christmas Day)

 

8am – 9am:  Welcome Christmas!

            Welcome Christmas! is the annual Christmas concert from VocalEssence, recognized internationally as one of America's premier choral groups. John Birge is producer and host of this one-hour special.

 

9am – 10am:  A Chanticleer Christmas

            A Chanticleer Christmas celebrates the mystery and wonder of Christmas with an elegant blend of traditional carols, medieval and Renaissance sacred works, and moving spirituals.  Featuring the world-renowned vocal ensemble Chanticleer.

 

10am – 11am:  Cantus: All is Calm!

                An uplifting musical drama about the surprising 1914 World War I Christmas Truce. Cantus, one of America's most accomplished male choirs, and Theater Latté Da tells the story, of soldiers who spontaneously put down their guns, walked across no-man's land, and sang together.

 

11am – Noon:  Christmas Around the Country

            NPR is back on the road with Christmas Around The Country: NPRs annual sampler of the best Christmas concerts from across the nation. From Atlanta, Salt Lake City, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Join host Lisa Simeone for NPRs mix of holiday music from churches, halls, and auditoriums all across America.

 

Noon – 1pm:  A Prevailing Winds Christmas

            Join Prevailing Winds host Bob Madeson for a special Christmas edition of this locally produced program featuring wind ensemble and concert band performances.

 

2pm – 3pm:  Leroy Anderson Christmas

            This one hour program contains 80% music of classic Christmas arrangements and original music by Leroy Anderson.  It is hosted by conductor Leonard Slatkin and the composer's son Kurt Anderson, and features recorded performances of Leroy Anderson’s Christmas Music with Leonard Slatkin conducting the BBC Concert Orchestra, and Leroy Anderson conducting his “Pops” Concert Orchestra.  Listeners will also hear Leroy Anderson talking about how he wrote some of his famous Christmas music and what Christmas means to him.

 


3pm – 4pm: Choirs & Carols: An NPR Christmas

            Hear musicians from around the world in NPR's performance studio as they share special holiday moments. Join host Lisa Simeone for ancient harmonies from Trio Medieval, traditional Latvian carols from the Riga Dom Boys Choir, and a rarely heard Christmas song by Sibelius, straight from Finland's YL Choir. The Pittsburgh Brass unpacks a pair of 500-pound bells to ring in the holiday, and the members of Trio Voronezh tune up a balalaika or two. 

 

5pm – 6pm:  A Christmas Carol w/Jonathan Winters

            Master comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive reading of Dickens' holiday classic, with a special performing edition prepared by Dickens for his own presentations. Also featuring Mimi Kennedy.

 

6pm – 7pm:  A Choral Christmas Card

            What better way to greet the Christmas season than with voices, raised in song? Songs to usher us into the mystical and to transport us to Yuletides past, whether it's hundreds of years past or just last year. A Choral Christmas Card is a coast-to-coast sampler of the country¿s best choirs singing carols for the season.

 

7pm – 8pm:  Christmas w/the Morehouse & Spelman Glee Clubs

            One of the great holiday traditions in America, the choirs of Morehouse and Spelman Colleges — two of the most prestigious historically black institutions in the nation — get together to present a spine-tingling concert program. This year's program features the best works of the last several years.

 

8pm – 9pm:  Jazz Piano Christmas

            NPR is onstage again at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for another LIVE incarnation of one of our most popular programs, mixing established jazz stars with promising newcomers to offer original and unique jazz interpretations of holiday favorites. Felix Contreas hosts. This year's superstar line-up includes Dr. Billy Taylor, Barry Harris, Hank Jones, Ellis Marsalis, and Joey DeFrancesco.

 

9pm – 10pm:  A Bay Whalin’ Hour Christmas

            Join former Dillingham resident Wendy Hladick for a special Christmas edition of the KDLG staple program The Bay Whalin’ Hour with jazz and singer-songwriter renditions of holiday classics and a few new compositions thrown in for good measure.
