Coastal Villages Seafood to Pay Highest Starting Processing Wage in Alaska

New workers this summer at the Goodnews Bay processing plan in Platinum will earn what’s believed to the highest starting processing wage in the state.  Coastal Villages Seafood will pay 10 dollars an hour for new employees. That’s up from 9 dollar an hour new workers have started at over the past 4 years. In boosting the wages, the company points to success in the CDQ’s Bering Sea catch as well as local improvements in processing efficiency. Dawson Hoover is the Communications Coordinator for Coastal Villages Regional Fund.

Flights Resume in Southwest Alaska

Shifting winds pushed the Pavlof volcano’s ash cloud out of flight paths Wednesday, allowing airlines to resume service. Pen Air’s planes went to Sand Point, Cold Bay, and Unalaska Wednesday after being grounded for two days. CEO Danny Seybert said that ash levels have come down to about 10,000 feet.

“There’s an easterly flow, which is what we wanted, a little bit of wind to blow ash in one direction,” said Seybert.” “All flights are operating normally today.”

Seybert says 18 to 20 flights were held over the past couple days.

Dillingham School Board Hires Staff for the Next School Year

A fire aboard the catcher processor Arctic Storm on Monday.

The fire that broke out Monday afternoon aboard a large catcher processor is out and no injuries have been reported. The Arctic Storm is a 334-foot catcher processor that works extensively in the North Pacific including the massive Pollock fishery in the Bering Sea.

Fishermen found guilty, although court agrees subsistence salmon fishing is religious

Nearly 50 fishermen were cited for illegal salmon fishing last June. Half of them pled not guilty and have been fighting it in court ever since. KYUK's Angela Denning-Barnes has more...
In recent weeks, the fishermen had been waiting to hear a decision on whether they have the religious right to subsistence fish, even during state closures. The trial resumed today in Bethel and the fishermen packed into the courtroom. It was a trial by judge and Judge Bruce Ward, in a gentle voice, said the court found that the state’s need to restrict King salmon supersedes the fishermen’s right to religious practice.
