Radiation from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant in Japan continues to leak into the Pacific Ocean raising concerns that seafood is being contaminated. However, the Food and Drug Administration reports that so far there is no evidence that radionuclides from the Fukushima incident are present in the U.S. food supply at levels that would pose a public health concern.

The Veniaminof Volcano is Settling Down

Once of the most active volcano’s in Alaska has begun to settle down after several months of eruptive activity. On Friday the Alaska Volcano Observatory lowered the Volcano Alert Level for the Veniaminof Volcano to “Advisory” from the more severe “Watch”.

For the next several day’s a group of salvage experts will try once again to raise the sunken tender Lone Star from the bottom of the Igushik River. The impact of the sinking on the local commercial salmon fishery was outlined this week during a meeting in Dillingham. KDLG’s Mike Mason was there and filed this report.

The new plan to recover the sunken fishing tender Lone Star has been approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. The vessel has been sitting in the middle of one of the major sockeye salmon producing rivers in Bristol Bay since late June.

The Alaska Native village corporation for Dillingham, Ekuk, and Portage Creek says "diminishing supplies of dry standing wood" prompted the change.
