New Years Eve

8:15pm – Midnight:  Toast of the Nation!

Party from coast to coast on New Year's Eve. From a Sonicbloom in Boston to a Pink Martini in Los Angeles, from ribs and Mingus in New York to black-eyed peas and a licorice stick in New Orleans, Toast of the Nation presents live music all night.

New Years Day

8am – 10am: Third Coast Festival Broadcast

The 2008 Third Coast Festival Broadcast features some of the best radio documentaries in the world — the winners of this year's Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition.

10am – 11am:  Johnny Cash: Live at Folsom Prison

In 1968, Johnny Cash entered California’s notorious Folsom Prison to play a concert. It wasn’t his first show there, or his last. But this time, he captured on tape the raw energy of the prisoners and camaraderie he felt with them. This program features highlights from Cash’s Folsom concert and talks with people who were there to see it – Folsom prison guards and inmates, Cash’s biographer Michael Steissguth, journalist Gene Beley (who covered the original event), and special guest Merle Haggard.

11am – 12pm: Capitol Steps: Politics Takes a Holiday

Should old acquaintance be forgot?  Not if the Capitol Steps have a say!  Say "yes we can" to listening to the Capitol Steps' annual year's end award ceremony.  New categories this year:  "Worst Use of a Plumber by a Politician (since Nixon)," "Best Shade of Lipstick for a Pig" and "Most Creative Excuse to Buy $150,000 Worth of Clothes."  Join Barack Obama, John McCain, Sarah Palin, Oprah Winfrey, FEMA, everyone who owns a sub-prime mortgage, Hillary Clinton, and many, many more as the Capitol Steps bring you their hour long year in review.  You have every reason to look forward to 2009- but not before we make fun of 2008 first.

12pm – 1pm:  Santana: Multi-Dimensional Warrior

Carlos Santana explores his extensive catalog to highlight tracks that reflect his deep spirituality. In an exclusive interview, Santana discusses how this relates to what he considers the most spiritual works from his catalog. The program also features rare music you won’t hear anywhere else. Live tracks from a may 2008 show at the Fillmore in San Francisco were taped forty years after he first headlined that storied venue, and his first show there in many years.

2pm – 3pm: Roy Orbison: The Soul of Rock & Roll

An intimate portrait of Roy’s full career from the Teen Kings to Sun Records, his huge 60’s hits to his 1980’s comeback, and his timeless influence still felt 20 years after his untimely death. Includes classic tracks like “Only the Lonely” and “Oh Pretty Woman,” plus previously unrealeased sessions and home demos.

3pm – 4pm:  Disney Hall: Lyle Lovett’s Songwriter’s Summit

Four singer-songwriters who straddle folk and country share some of their favorite new songs and old standards, slipping in a few tributes to the city of Los Angeles, home to the dazzling Disney Concert Hall.

8pm – 9pm: To Be Free: The Nina Simone Story

Like any legend, Nina Simone became a symbol for people and movements through the years, but however, she was first and foremost a performer. She acted out the story of each song as if it happened to her just yesterday. We’ll hear about the music and life of Nina Simone from colleagues and friends.

9pm – 11pm:  Newport Jazz Festival 2008: Hot Summer Jams

The Newport Jazz Festival has been a magnet for top jazz performers every year since it began in 1954, as well as the source of storied jazz recordings, including iconic performances by Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and Nina Simone. This year looks to be no different, and this Hot Summer Jams special will feature two hours of highlights. WBGO's Josh Jackson will host from the festival grounds. An NPR Music co-production with WBGO
