Large seafood companies buy and sell most of the sockeye caught every summer in Bristol Bay, but there are a lot of small businesses that sell fillets right to customers all over the country and finding some success doing it. KDLG visited some of these small processors to talk shop.

More Time to Comment on "Frankenfish"

The public is being afforded more time to comment on a new genetically engineered fish species that many opponents are calling a "Frankenfish". If the "AquAdvantage Salmon" is ultimately approved it will be the first genetically engineered animal destined for human consumption.

Rebecca Weel pushes a baby stroller with her 18-month-old up to the seafood case at Whole Foods, near ground zero in New York. As she peers at shiny fillets of salmon, halibut and Chilean sea bass labeled "certified sustainable," Weel believes that if she purchases this seafood, she will help protect the world's oceans from overfishing.

A handful of Democrats in the Alaska House and Senate have put forward their own plan to change the oil tax structure in Alaska. This comes as consideration of the Governor's plan moves into high gear this week in Juneau.

Refrigerators, foam buoys and even ketchup bottles are piling up on Alaska's beaches. Almost two years after the devastating Japanese tsunami, its debris and rubbish are fouling the coastlines of many states — especially in Alaska.

At the state's Montague Island beach, the nearly 80 miles of rugged wilderness looks pristine from a helicopter a few thousand feet up. But when you descend, globs of foam come into view.
